Managing youth sports renews my passion for working with kids
By Mark Guthrie
I volunteer managing and coordinating the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball program at Church of the Nativity in Burke, VA, for boys and girls 3rd through 8th grades. As a former high school basketball coach, I began this volunteer work when my wife and I joined the Church of the Nativity in 2012. I began coaching the 4th grade boys’ basketball team and continued to coach them through their 8th grade graduation in 2017. I am now settling into my new role as the church representative in charge of the CYO sports program, managing registration for children, recruiting and selecting coaches, scheduling practices and games for the teams, handling the administration and paperwork submitted to all the leagues and the Arlington Diocese, and working with the coaches and kids at practices and games. As a former high school teacher, I am renewing my passion for working with kids and have embraced this transition to working with elementary and middle school children.
